What controls planetary albedo? How do clouds and water vapour regulate energy flows in the atmospheric system? What role does the stratosphere play in the Earth’s climate? These are some of the questions that we investigate in the atmosphere research area. Studies span from the global to small scales (e.g. turbulent mixing processes) and from multi-annual to hourly processes. We use radiation models, coupled models and satellite observations as part of our research.

Doctoral candidates are affiliated with either the department The Atmosphere in the Earth System at the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology or the Meteorological Institute at the University of Hamburg. Individual research topics are inspired and guided by the interests of the candidate’s host research group.
