• SCLab recommends to change your password every year. (No technical enforcement will be applied for this rule.)

  • We reserve the right to enforce password changes if this is appropriate due to technical or security reasons.

  • SCLab gives due notice if you will be enforced to change your password. (As a general rule password changes will be enforced within 3 months after you got the announcement about it.)

  • Starting 4 weeks in advance of the date when your password will expire you will be regularly notified by e-mail until you changed your password.(Particularly notifications will be sent once a week and additionally once a day during the last week before expiration.)

  • If you do not change your password until the expiration date your account will be locked.

  • Always choose a SECURE PASSWORD:

    • At least 8 characters (although a minimum of 10 characters is highly recommended).

    • At least one uppercase letter (A through Z)

    • At least one lowercase letter (a through z)

    • At least one digit (0 through 9)

    • At least one non-alphabetic characters (e.g. !, $, #, %)

    • Password history: 24 passwords

    • In addition it should not contain your account id or parts of your full name.

  • Password checks on Windows are currently slightly stronger. Linux checks the password against weaker dictionary words (due to the necessity of checking against lower and uppercase characters) and lacks a password history. So in rare cases if you set a new password on Linux it may not be properly synchronized to Windows. In this case please verify first whether the strength of your new password meets also the Windows password policy.

  • You will not be able to login either on Linux or Windows machines any more

  • Your data including your e-mails and your home directory will not be deleted but it remains unavailable as long as your account is locked

  • At first you need to contact your group leader

  • Your group leader will ask CIS to unlock your account

  • If properly authorized CIS will unlock your account again

  • CIS will reset your login password with either the initial account password or with a random-generated password

  • Contact your group leader or optionally CIS to obtain your account password

  • If you contact CIS for the password it is necessary to identify yourself
