Stephanie Fiedler takes up professorship in Cologne

Dr Stephanie Fiedler, former scientist in the department "The Atmosphere in the Earth System" at the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-M), took up a position as junior professor for energy meteorology at the Institute for Geophysics and Meteorology at the University of Cologne in January 2020.

Jun.-Prof. Dr. Stephanie Fiedler

Stephanie Fiedler's research group focuses on basic meteorological research for the supply of renewable energies. Her research will continue to focus on aerosols and winds in climate change. From the university side as director of the research area, she is in charge of basic research for "Climate Monitoring and Diagnostics" at the Hans-Ertel Centre (HErZ) for Weather Research of the German meteorological service. In addition, Stephanie Fiedler is "Chief Energy Meteorologist" at the Institute of Energy Economics (EWI) at the University of Cologne, a non-profit institution for knowledge about energy markets.

Stephanie Fiedler studied meteorology at the Leibniz University of Hannover and graduated in 2011. She completed her doctorate in 2014 at the School of Earth and Environment at the University of Leeds, UK. She then worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology KIT and at the MPI-M. At the MPI-M she developed a physical parameterization scheme for anthropogenic aerosol plumes, which is now used in climate models worldwide. Furthermore, she was leading contributions to the model inter-comparison project on radiative forcing, which provides climate simulations for the new IPCC Assessment Report on Climate Change.
