COSMOS: 7th General Assembly of Earth System Scientists in Berlin

From 15 to 17 June 2009 70 scientists from eleven European countries met in Berlin for the annual General Assembly of the COSMOS network and exchanged the latest research results. The „Community Earth System Models“ (COSMOS) network, initiated by the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-M), brings international research groups together in order to work in joint Earth system science projects in which models are used.

The assembly was chaired by Prof. Martin Claussen, Director at the MPI-M and Professor for Meteorology at the University of Hamburg, Dr. Heikki Jarvinen of the Finnish Meteorological Institute in Helsinki and Prof. Robert Sausen of the German Aerospace Center in Oberpfaffenhofen. Together with the other COSMOS members they discussed the recent activities in Earth system model developments. In addition to individual projects and new data sets, the preparations for the IPCC AR5 model runs were presented.

„For me the most important result of this meeting is, that the institutions associated with COSMOS agreed with our idea of opening up COSMOS towards a more cooperative network”, says Board Chair Prof. Claussen. “From now on model systems that were developed in other institutions will be looked at within COSMOS as well, e. g. the ECHAM5 based EMAC of the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry, which focuses more on the chemistry within the Earth system. Furthermore we discussed more than we had done in the past years how to apply climate and Earth system modelling for climate impacts.”

COSMOS is intended

  • to foster development and evaluation of state of-the-art climate and Earth system models,
  • to facilitate focused model inter-comparison in order to assess and improve these models,
  • to encourage exchanges of software and model results,
  • to adhere to the principles of Open Access,
  • to strive, as a European based network, for international cooperation, and
  • to help to establish the necessary computational resources.

The next General Assembly of the COSMOS network will take place in Sweden in 2010.
