Climatic effect of recent reforestation of abandoned agricultural land in northern boreal regions

During the last half of century, there is a pronounced trend of reforestation of former agricultural land in boreal and temperate regions. For example, substantial fraction of agricultural land in central Russia was abandoned in the last decades. Reforestation of boreal regions has effect on climate through biogeophysical effects (changes in surface albedo due to snow-masking effect of forests) and through biogeochemical effects (carbon uptake by forest regrowth). How significant is regional climate change in response to the recent reforestation trend? This question is going to be addressed in simulations with the MPI Earth System model.
