Isaac Held wins important Climate Change Award
Isaac M. Held, member of MPI-M’s Scientific Advisory Board, is the winner of the BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award 2012 in the Climate Change category for his fundamental contribution to understanding the structure of atmospheric circulation systems and the role of water vapor in climate change. Held predicts that if CO2 emissions are not curtailed, temperatures in the Mediterranean will rise by 3° in the next century while rainfall levels will drop by between 10 % and 15 %.
The BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Awards recognize the role of science and cultural creation as levers of society’s progress and wellbeing. Their Climate Change category makes this award the premier award dedicated to climate change science; it also comprises an original piece of artwork and 400,000 EUR. Its past recipients were Wallace S. Broecker, MPI-M’s founding director Klaus Hasselmann, and Nicholas Stern.
Bjorn Stevens, managing director of the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology, was the chairman of the jury.
