Important visitors: Olaf Scholz and Dorothee Stapelfeldt at the KlimaCampus
Hamburg's First Mayor Olaf Scholz and Senator for Science Dr Dorothee Stapelfeldt visited the KlimaCampus on 20 January to inform themselves on site about the scientific work of the respective institutions.
In addition to a short presentation of the German Climate Computing Centre (Deutsches Klimarechenzentrum, DKRZ), the excellence cluster CliSAP, the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-M) and the Helmholtz Centre Geesthacht the guests gained an insight into the local climate research. Mr Scholz and Dr Stapelfeldt experienced the town center of Hamburg both virtually within a 3-D visualization of wind simulations at the DKRZ and as a model in Europe's largest boundary-layer wind tunnel which is operated at the University of Hamburg.
Additionally, they visited the super computer of the DKRZ, a high-performance computer available for all climate researchers in Germany.
All these research fields, well-connected and concentrated at the KlimaCampus, show that, according to Bjorn Stevens, managing director at the MPI-M, “climate and climate research are simply a part of Hamburg's DNA“. “An inspiring phrase“, agreed Mayor Olaf Scholz.
