IPCC appoints new authors: Scientists from Hamburg assume important functions for the 2012 IPCC Assessment Report
Scientists of the KlimaCampus in Hamburg (Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-M) and University of Hamburg) will be assuming important author functions for the next IPCC Assessment Report. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) named five scientists from Hamburg as so-called „Lead Authors“, some of whom will have overall coordinating functions.
“The IPCC Report is an important and, in its form, unique stocktaking of what we know about climate change and it’s consequences for the environment and for society”, says Prof. Jochem Marotzke of the MPI-M, who will act as „Coordinating Lead Author“ – the highest author category. Along with Marotzke, four further colleagues of the KlimaCampus were chosen by the IPCC to be lead authors: Dr. Victor Brovkin and Prof. Bjorn Stevens of the MPI-M for the chapters „Carbon and Biogeochemical Cycles” and „Clouds and Aerosols”. As a specialist for the central topic sea level rise, the panel chose Prof. Detlef Stammer of the Institute for Physical Oceanography of the University of Hamburg, who is also a Max Planck Fellow. All four will belong to the Working Group 1, which deals with the physics of climate change and basic natural science. Prof. Daniela Jacob (MPI-M and Climate Service Center) was chosen for the Working Group 2, which is concerned with the impacts of climate change on environment and society and possible adaptation measures.
The report brings together climate knowledge which has been gained by the
international scientific community in recent years. The authors review, compare and integrate the results. Considering the criticism of the last report from 2007, in which inconsistencies were found which had to be subsequently corrected, there is one central task for the authors of the coming report: the submitted contributions must be stringently reviewed with regard to the rules of good scientific practice.
