Spouses and children
Spouses and children of scientists working at the Max Planck Institute for prolonged periods (please enquire details beforehand) receive permisson to stay in Germany. Provided the scientist coming to work at the Max Planck Institute is entitled to get a valid visa from a German diplomatic mission, see Visa and Residence Permits, the procedure is fairly easy. Every accompanying family member also needs a separate visa for entry.
In certain cases the Max Planck Society grants financial support for spouses and children accompanying a scientists who is working at the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology. Please ask for the conditions by contacting the IO.
Nationals requiring no visa procedure to come and work in Germany can also bring their family with minimum formalities. Please enquire details early with the IO when planning your visit.
If a visa is required for your working visit in Germany, these are the major prerequisites for entry and residence of guest scientist's family members. Family members must have
- a valid passport
- proof of sufficient accomodation
- proof of sufficient financial means of subistence including means to pay a health insurance. The Max Planck Society is able to offer limited financial support for accompanying spouses and children under certain conditions. Please enquire with the IO for the exact details
- if proof of sufficient financial means is produced, an invitation letter for the guest scientist can mention an explicit statement regarding the family members. This is considered to be sufficient proof in the visa application process
- marriage certificate or other proof of an existing matrimony considered valid under German law.
