Scientific Working Groups
The basic unit of organization within the department is the scientific working group. Working groups are lead by a senior scientist, and carry the responsibility for developing and maintaining the department's infrastructure. The working groups reflect the interests of their group leader, while contributing to the strategic priorities of the department and its director. By centering the director's active research projects in the different groups, and through departmental and institutional initiatives, the department strives to be more than the sum of its parts. In addition to the scientific working groups, the department is also proud to occasionally host independent, externally funded, research groups, which while they have a more independent structure, also contribute vitally to the scientific life of the department.
Climate Modelling (Marco Giorgetta)
Climate Dynamics (Jürgen Bader and Thorsten Mauritsen)
Middle and Upper Atmosphere (Hauke Schmidt)
Observations & Process Studies (Stefan Kinne and Louise Nuijens)
Clouds and Convective Processes (Cathy Hohenegger and Axel Seifert)
Turbulent Mixing Processes in the Earth System (Juan Pedro Mellado)
The Clouds and Convective Processes group is funded with support of the German Weather Service (DWD). The group on Turbulent Mixing Processes in the Earth System is led by Juan Pedro Mellado and is funded through the Max Planck Society central funds for the support of junior researchers. Until recently the department also hosted an Emmy Noether Junior research group on Cloud-Climate Feedbacks. The group was lead by Johannes Quaas, who has since accepted a professor position at the University of Leipzig.
