- Diurnal cycle of moist convection over land
- Land-surface atmosphere interactions
During my PhD I developed an idealized cloud-resolving modeling framework for the study of the diurnal cycle of moist convection over land in mid-latitude areas. In the framework, we prescribe the conditions in the upper troposphere and lower soil, and let the soil-atmosphere interface in-between develop freely.
Using this framework, we investigate the sensitivity of the convection to mid- and upper-tropospheric stability, to the atmospheric humidity and to the soil- moisture content.

- Instantaneous view of diurnal convection in the idealized cloud-resolving modeling framework at 1651 LST. Pink volumes indicate cloud water, blue volumes cloud ice and green volumes hydrometeors (graupel, snow and rain). The skin temperature is displayed on the land surface with values in K given by the color-code. The domain size is 220x220 km.
A movie showing one selected diurnal cycle of the convection in the framework is available here
