Research interests

My primary research interest is the interconnectedness between marine biology and climate. The goal is to better understand how the physical and chemical ocean environment affects marine biota and biogenic induced carbon fluxes. An additional research focus is to assess the strength of biological climate feedback mechanisms.

I am developing and applying global biogeochemical models to study

  • oceanic nutrient cycles with special emphasis on nitrogen
  • production of biogenic climate relevant gases, e.g. dimethylsulfide (DMS), and their future predictions
  • variations of marine biology in present, past and future ocean introduced by natural and anthropogenic impacts
