Research Interests

Climate is a complex system consisting of many different interactions and feedbacks operating on a wide range of scales. When viewed individually, many of these interactions and feedbacks are reasonably well understood. This situation however does not imply that the climate system as a whole is well understood. Due to the non-linear coupling between processes, the behavior of the full system is not necessarily the sum of individual processes. More than that, in case when the number of interactions is extremely large so that statistical descriptions become inevitable, new rules can emerge. Such rules, which relate statistics of climate variables and result from a large number of interactions, can generally not be identified with any particular known processes. One example of such rules is the fluctuation -dissipation relation. Within the context of high-end earth system modeling, my research focuses on the investigation of these statistical rules. The primary questions are: Under what conditions can statistical rules emerge? How are the statistical rules related to the non-linear cross-scale interactions resolved in the system? What are the implications of these rules for climate predictions (defined as predictions of statistics of climate variables given changes in the external forcing)?
