The Barbados effort is an initiative of Prof. Dr. Bjorn Stevens who has experience with several field campaigns (DYCOMS, RICO) and still has not had enough of subtropical clouds. It combines a group of people with different scientific and engineering backgrounds and is led by Dr. Lutz Hirsch and Dr. Louise Nuijens.

Together with Friedhelm Jansen, an environmental and safety engineer, Lutz Hirsch oversees the instrumentation, logistics and data collection at the site and is responsible for the building and maintenance of the radar systems. Dr. Ilya Serikov, Bjorn Bruegmann and Holger Linne provide additional support for the site and develop and maintain the lidar systems (Raman and DIAL).

Deployment of new instrumentation, failing AC systems, power drops, and occasional hurricanes has made our crew travel to Barbados more than once and taught them the tough parts of maintaining a site far from home. Luckily, they get help from Marvin Forde, a technician at CIMH, who visits the site at least once a week to maintain the instruments and wipe off the large amount of sea-salt that is sprayed all over the site.

Louise oversees the scientific analysis of observations collected at the site and works together with Katrin Lonitz, a PhD student who performs statistical analysis of the scanning cloud radar. Together we hope to unravel some of the intriguing questions as to what controls the behavior of shallow cumulus convection.
