MPIOM

The Max Planck Institute ocean model (MPIOM) is the ocean-sea ice component of the MPI-ESM. MPIOM is a primitive equation model (C-Grid, z-coordinates, free surface) with the hydrostatic and Boussinesq assumptions made. It includes an embedded dynamic/thermodynamic sea ice model with a viscous-plastic rheology following Hibler (1979) and a bottom boundary layer scheme for the flow across steep topography. MPIOM uses a curvilinear orthogonal grid which allows for a variety of configurations. A description of MPIOM can be found at Marsland et al. (2003).

HAMOCC

HAMOCC is a sub-model that simulates biogeochemical tracers in the oceanic water column and in the sediment. It is set up as a subroutine of MPIOM, but can be interfaced to any Ocean General Circulation Model.  All biogeochemical tracers are fully advected and mixed by the hosting OGCM. The biogeochemical model itself is driven by the same radiation as the OGCM to compute photosynthesis. Temperature and salinity are used to calculate various transformation rates and constants e.g., for solubility of carbon dioxide.

The current version of MPIOM/HAMOCC is used in contributions to the sixth phase of the coupled model intercomparison project (CMIP6). The MPIOM/HAMOCC source code is freely available to the public at large. External access to the model is provided through a licensing procedure.

MPIOMs grid is either bipolar (GR) with two poles , e.g. over Greenland and Antarctica, or tripolar (TP) with three poles, e.g. over North America, Sibiria and Antarctica.

Every version incorporates a complete representation of physical processes, and allows for coupling to ocean biogeochemistry sub-model HAMOCC.

Extensions

MPIOM includes a tidal sub-model which is developed in cooperation with scientists of the Earth System Modelling group of  German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ).

A technical documentation is included in the model distribution. A scientific documentation is provided through many papers in the special issue of JAMES devoted to the MPI-ESM, e.g. Jungclaus, et al. (2013) and Ilyina, et al. (2013).
