Available models

The models listed below are currently available to the scientific community. This list comprises single models, as for example ECHAM5 or MPIOM, and coupled Earth system models as they are packaged in models like the most recent MPI-M Earth System Model MPI-ESM or the older COSMOS framework.

The MPI-ESM includes different model codes, a coupling software and scripts. Scripts allow to extract and run specific models, including for example ECHAM6, MPIOM, or ECHAM6/MPIOM with or without the carbon cycle. For practical reasons the single models will still be available.

MPI-M Earth System Model

 The MPI-ESM contains ECHAM6, JSBACH, MPI-OM and HAMOCC. It is the model version with which the CMIP5 experiments were conducted, and is made available in its current (2012-02-22) form only to users of the DKRZ machine blizzard. Releases supporting other platforms as well as a distribution mechanism for the forcing data are currently developed.

COSMOS software package

The COSMOS-1.2.1.1 package includes model codes of ECHAM5, ECHAM5J, MPIOM, and HAMOCC, and  the OASIS coupler. In addition it includes the Standard Compiling Environment and Standard Running Environment. Using standardized scripts, a user can compile and run for example ECHAM5, MPIOM, or ECHAM5-JSBACH/MPIOM-HAMOCC. The model system has been tested on the Tornado Linux cluster of MPI-M and DKRZ and the IBM Power6 high performance computer of DKRZ.
