Human Dimension

The multi-disciplinary research groups concerned with the human dimension of the Earth system seek to understand the impact of human development on the Earth system. Central are questions of sustainable development, environmental quality, economic efficiency and social equity. Mathematical modelling techniques help explore interactions between human-induced environmental change, global climate change, climate variability and the socio-economic impacts of climate projections. Researchers bridge natural and social sciences using diverse methods, for example, dynamic macroeconomics or agent based optimisation modelling.

Doctoral candidates are affiliated with either the Department of Economics or the Research Unit Sustainability and Global Change, both at the University of Hamburg. Individual research topics are inspired and guided by the interests of the candidate’s host research group.
