Science Express exhibition train to be launched by Chancellor Merkel
On April 23, 2009 the German Chancellor Angela Merkel will launch the Science Express exhibition train at Berlin Central Station. From April to November this mobile, interactive exhibition will tour all 16 German federal states and stop in over 60 cities. In 12 altered cars visitors can learn something about how research and technology will change our lives in the next decades. The project has been organised and realised by the Max Planck Society, Munich, and the design agency ArchiMeDes, Berlin.

As a contribution to the Science Year 2009, this exhibition train of more than 300 metres of track will take visitors on a journey of discovery into the world of science: How will we live in 20 years? How will research and technology develop? Numerous exhibits, pictures and background information focus on these and even more questions in different theme cars: from the beginning of our world to merging the disciplines of life science, nanoscience, information science as well as cognition science and the future of medical science, nutrition, mobility and energy. Many German research institutes, universities and companies are supporting the exhibition and are lending their exhibits.
The Max Planck Institute for Meteorology in Hamburg will also showcase some of its results: within the frame of the Earth System Research Partnership it developed an exhibit called “Future Climate” that deals with the tipping elements in the Earth’s climate system – on a global and a regional basis. The Science Train will stop in Hamburg (Altona train station) from August 30 to September 1, 2009 and addresses all curious onlookers – from students to junior scientists. Opening hours are from 9 am to 6 pm on weekdays and from 10 am to 7 pm on weekends. Admission is free.
