New Printer in 4th Floor; Installation on Macs

2012-02-09: Recently the new printer z0423-m3 has been installed by CIS. If you want to use it from the Macs, you need to download and install LEXMARK printer drivers.

Go to http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1397 and download the software from there.

Double-click the dmg-file you just downloaded, this will mount a disk image on your mac.

Double-click that disk, and double-click the "LexmarkPrinterDrivers-pkg" - file it contains. This will take you through the installation procedure.

Now the printer drivers for Lexmark Printers are installed.

Follow the instructions shown on http://cis.zmaw.de/support/faqs/printer.html -> <How can I print with Mac OS X>. Select the Lexmark X652de Printer from the list of available printers.

This should work. Let me know if not! Don't forget to remove the dmg file afterwards!

Notes from a little meeting end of December 2009 with some Macians. This page only serves as temporary solution, a projects on https://code.zmaw.de will be established early net year.

Luis recommended to

Install first for convenience:

Based upon MacPorts install:

Need to use sudo!

port install autoconf
port install automake
port install cotvnc
port install doxygen
port install gcc43
port install gnuplot
port install netcdf +gcc43 +netcdf4 +openmpi +static
port install xfig
port install emacs-app
port install doxygen
port intall cdo
port install ncview

Also chicken of vnc can be used to have a blizzard remote desktop configured.

This should enable you to run ECHAM/ICON with a slightls adapted script available from Öffnet ein Fenster zum Versenden einer E-Mailhim.

Printers@ZMAW:

See here. Be advised that the Lexmark-Printer in the printers room on the 4th floor works best with the "Generic Pronter Driver" enabled, we need to check for better drivers here.

Using external screens for presentations:

First of all, you need to connect an external screen to your mac, and look at and get familiar with the system preferences "Display", "Monitore" in German. You can adjust quite a few things there w.r.t. the behviour of the different screens.

Mirroring is not recommended, since this often reduces sreen resolution too much.

I think it is nicer to keep control of the screens on your desktop, but some people like it to be on the projection screen, too. This is set by dragging the little white bar representing the menu bar in the "Arrange" view of the preference from one screen to the other.

Once you have adjusted these settings, both presentation SW-packages mentioned below will "know" both screens, and be ready for your settings in the preferences of the respective software. Please do not try the things mentioned here if you do not have an external screen attached.

With Powerpoint:

Go to the menu "Slide Show", "Set up show", and then to the very buttom, where there is a button which screen to use for the presentation, and which one for the moderator monitor. Adjust, play around, and have fun!

With Keynote:

Go to "Preferences", "Presentation" and then to the very buttom, adjust, play around, and have fun!

I hope it works for you!
