Language
In a big German city like Hamburg, you often get by with speaking English. The further you move away from the city center and, generally speaking, from the environment of Hamburg University and its surrounding quarters, speaking German will be of great help to cope with everyday life.
As already mentioned, the Max Planck Institute offers free language courses. English and German are taught in in-house classes at different levels. We strongly recommend to join these courses which are very popular at our institute. Ask for details at the Human Resources Department.
