DIRECTIONS TO MPI-M

 

The Max Planck Institute is located just across the road near 'Schlump'  underground station,  next to a 18 storey university building, the 'Geomatikum'. The institute is located in the new, glass-walled 'ZMAW Building' (ZMAW = Centre for Marine and Atmsopheric Sciences). BY PLANE

 

International Flights
to Hamburg Airport frequently arrive in Germany via Frankfurt. Transfer timeswithin the airport are fairly long. This map of  Frankfurt Airport may help you cath your connecting flights in time.


Public transport:

Hamburg buses and undergrounds are operated by HVV. All tickets you buy are valid for buses and undergrounds. An underground map to direct you to MPI-M can be found at the bottom of the page.

From Hamburg Airport, please take the S-Bahn S1 (direction "Ohlsdorf") to "Ohlsdorf" station where you get off to enter the blue underground line no. U1, direction "Ohlstedt/Großhansdorf". Please exit at "Kellinghusenstraße", change to the yellow line no. U3 on the same platform (direction "Wandsbek-Gartenstadt") and  get off at "Schlump" underground station.


Travel time for the alternative route is about 5 minutes more, but only requires a single train change: Please take the S-Bahn S1 (direction "Ohlsdorf") to "Barmbek" station (please note: at Ohlsdorf two coaches will be coupled, but you can remain seated). At Barmbek please change to the yellow underground line U3 (direction "Wandsbek-Gartenstadt") and exit at "Schlump" underground station.

Taxi from the airport:

Cost is approx. 17-22 EUR. Transfer time: 30 minutes, depending on traffic density.

 

BY TRAIN

 

Public transport:
Arriving by train at the central railway station (Hauptbahnhof/Hbf), take the HVV underground U2, red line, (tickets from machines in the station entrance hall). Enter trains signed 'Niendorf-Nord/Niendorf-Markt'. Get off at 'Schlump' underground station.


Train connections to and from Hamburg can be found at the site of Deutsche Bahn.

 

Taxi from the central railway station:
Cost is approx. 10 EUR. Transfer time: 15 minutes, depending on traffic density.

 

 

 

BY CAR

 

From the North:
Leave the motorway A7, exit 'Stellingen', and follow the B4/B5, direction 'Centrum'. Then take the B5, following the sign 'Centrum'. At the crossing 'Schäferkampsallee/Beim Schlump' (underground station Schlump) turn left into the road 'Beim Schlump'. At the next crossing 'Beim Schlump/Bundesstraße' (hairdresser on the left) turn right into the road 'Bundesstraße'. The 'MPI-M' include the 'ZMAW Building' you can find on the right after the 'Geomatikum', in the 'Bundesstraße 53'.


From the South:
Leave the motorway A7, exit 'Bahrenfeld', and follow the B431, direction 'Centrum'. At the metropolitan station 'Holstenstrasse', turn to the left by the theater 'Neue Flora' into 'Alsenstrasse' (Ring 2). After approx. 1 km, turn right into 'Fruchtallee' (the high-rise building 'Doormannsweg 22' on the left), to the crossing 'Schaeferkampsallee/Beim Schlump'. Than turn left into the road 'Beim Schlump'. At the next crossing 'Beim Schlump/Bundesstraße' (hairdresser on the left) turn right into the road 'Bundesstraße'. The 'MPI-M' include the 'ZMAW Building' you can find on the right after the 'Geomatikum', in the 'Bundesstraße 53'.


From the East:
Drive on the motorway A1/A24 to the end of A24 junction 'Horn' and drive into a roundabout. From there, drive along 'Sievekingsallee' as far as the crossing 'Buergerweide/Wallstrasse/Muehlendamm'. Turn right into 'Wallstrasse' and drive along 'Sechslingspforte' up to the waterfront of the lake 'Aussenalster'. Turn to the left into 'An der Alster' and, with the lake to your right, cross the 'Kennedy' bridge. Continue the 'Edmund-Siemers-Allee' (Dammtor Railway Station on your left), taking the left lane. Turn right into 'Bundesstrasse' and cross the 'Rentzelstraße' and than you can find the 'MPI-M' include the 'ZMAW building' (green) on the left next to the 'Geomatikum', in the 'Bundesstraße 53'.
