Doctoral Programme at MPI-M

The International Max Planck Research School on Earth System Modelling (IMPRS-ESM) at the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-M) in Hamburg, Germany, educates excellent junior scientists in studying the Earth’s climate system. MPI-M and the University of Hamburg jointly run the IMPRS-ESM to promote a fundamental and state-of-the-art academic training in Earth system modelling. The Ph.D. students learn to work and think interdisciplinary. They become experts in their own research field, but will additionally get an insight into other Earth system research topics. Doctoral candidates learn to apply MPI-M’s Earth system models that range in complexity and scale, and acquire the ability to handle and use the high performance computing systems of the German Climate Computing Centre (DKRZ), applying the Earth system models on their supercomputers.

Since 2001 the IMPRS-ESM has offered a modern and well-structured academic programme with outstanding research facilities. An advisory panel system guarantees a systematic supervision, and seminars and courses help to broaden the knowledge in Earth system research. The Ph.D. candidates are encouraged to participate in summer schools, conferences and workshops. Since the beginning, 129 doctoral candidates have received their Ph.D. degree.

Since 2000, the International Max Planck Research Schools (IMPRS) have become an integral part of the efforts of the Max Planck Society to promote Ph.D. students. Currently, there are 63 IMPRS. The research schools are established by one or several Max Planck Institutes. By now 80 Max Planck Institutes are associated with an IMPRS. In general, about half of the junior researchers are from Germany and the other half from around the world. Working language is English. The right to confer degrees remains with the respective university. However, scientists at both the Max Planck Institutes and the universities jointly supervise the students and conduct examinations.
