Thanks to his outstanding performances in the research field “dynamics of atmosphere and climate processes” Prof. Dr. Klaus Fraedrich, Meteorological Institute of the University of Hamburg, has been appointed Max Planck Fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-M) by the Max Planck Society’s (MPG) President Prof. Dr. Peter Gruss. Hence, Klaus Fraedrich is one of only two scientists who have received this distinction in the chemical-physical-technical section of the MPG within the current year.

Klaus Fraedrich is head of the working group “Theoretical Meteorology” at the Meteorological Institute of the University of Hamburg. This unit stands for a wide range of research fields such as non-linear system analysis, climate modelling and theoretical concepts. The renowned working group closely collaborates with oceanographical, meteorological and physical institutions on an international level. Klaus Fraedrich has released more than 150 publications and won several prizes: besides the “Gay Lussac Prize”, he has been granted the Max Planck Award of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and was also member of the German Advisory Council on Global Change. Moreover, the German Climate Research Programme’s only junior team working on palaeoclimate modelling, which is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), was established in his department.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Monika Auweter-Kurtz, President of the University of Hamburg said: “I cordially congratulate Prof. Fraedrich on this great distinction. The University of Hamburg appreciates the fact that the appointment of Prof. Fraedrich enables the Max Planck Institute and the University of Hamburg to intensify their already close and productive cooperation.”

“Appointing Prof. Fraedrich Max Planck Fellow is a real asset for the MPI-M”, Prof. Dr. Martin Claussen said, Managing Director of the MPI-M.

The “Max Planck Fellow” programme of the MPG aims to strengthen the relationship between universities and Max Planck Institutes by affiliating brilliant scientists to the MPG. The fellowship is limited to a maximum of five years and entails managing a working group at the MPI-M in the present case of Klaus Fraedrich.
